Exterior, Evergreen home

We don’t paint hundreds of homes a year.

Tall Pines is a small crew Bryan Kelly started in Evergreen in January 2005. The office has moved down the hill to Golden, and the work still runs from the foothills to west Denver.

Our customers tend to be picky about quality, and we like it that way. Bryan enjoys the tougher jobs too: weathered cedar, 75-year-old cabinets, rooms with high ceilings.

Crew members are picked for more than their brushwork. They’re polite, they wear uniforms, and they don’t play loud music or smoke on your job.

Cedar siding on a mountain home Tall Pines stained

Stain opacity

Choose the stain by the wood you have.

The condition of the wood decides the opacity. Tap through the four to see how each one changes the same cedar wall.

Semi-transparent stain

Enough pigment to make a color statement while most of the natural grain still shows.

Best forWood in good to fair condition

Every coat is sprayed, then back brushed by hand. That works the stain deeper into the wood, so it protects longer and is less likely to peel.

Three phases, the same crew start to finish.

Avoiding surprises is the whole point. Here’s what happens on an exterior job.

01

Planning at your house

Your project manager meets you in person to go over the details, the start date, how long the job will take, and where the crew should keep their tools.

Phase 1: planning and color
  • Kick-off meetingScope, schedule and questions, so there are no surprises later.
  • Color matchingWe match your current color before work starts, so you know it’s right.
  • Help choosingColor brochures, or a visit at home from a color consultant.
  • Samples on the houseUp to three color samples painted on your home before we begin.
02

Prep, then paint

The crew introduces themselves, and the same people stay on your job from start to finish. Prep comes before any paint.

Phase 2: prep and paint
  • Pressure washingSo the top coat bonds and lasts longer.
  • Scrape, sand, primeGloss sanded off, bare wood primed and sealed against sun and water.
  • Caulk and fillSeals out moisture and drafts, and makes the finish look better.
  • Masking and drop clothsBrick, roofs and plants covered against spray and drips.
  • Spray, brush and rollerWhatever combination the surface needs.
  • Daily cleanupTools stored where you agreed, paint chips vacuumed, trash gone.
03

The walk-through

When the job is done, your project manager walks the house with you and inspects the work side by side.

Phase 3: inspection
  • InspectionYou look at the work together, so you know you’re happy with it.
  • WarrantyTerms depend on the type of work and come in writing with your estimate.
  • Report cardYou grade the crew by hand. More on that below.

Report cards

Every job ends with a report card.

When the work is done, the homeowner gets a one-page card to fill out by hand. It asks how likely they are to refer us on a scale of 0 to 10, and grades the crew on six things. These are real ones, posted with each homeowner’s permission.

  • Promptness
  • Efficiency
  • Well mannered
  • Clean and uniformed

Curved staircase with a stained wood handrail
Do you charge for estimates?

No. Estimates are free, with no obligation. Send the form below or call 720-210-7643.

Can you match the color I have now?

Yes. We match your current color before any work starts, so you know it’s right. If you’re changing colors, we can paint up to three samples on your home first.

How long does cabinet painting take?

Usually 3 to 5 days. It depends on the size of the kitchen and how many cabinets we’re painting.

Which stain should I use on my deck or siding?

It depends on the condition of the wood. Transparent stain suits wood in excellent shape, semi-transparent suits good to fair wood, and semi-solid or solid stain protects weathered wood. We’ll look at it with you and recommend one.

Do you offer a warranty?

Yes. The terms depend on the type of work, and we put them in writing with your estimate.

Can solid stain go over painted wood?

Yes. Solid color stain can be applied over previously painted surfaces.
